At the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse paid an official visit to the Republic of Indonesia and the ASEAN Secretariat from March 9 to 11, 2025.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo Member, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA), and Chairman of the Central Council on Theoretical Studies accompanied the Party General Secretary’s delegation. This visit holds significant importance, reaffirming Viet Nam’s commitment to strengthening and developing its strategic partnership with Indonesia while also demonstrating Viet Nam’s active role in ASEAN, promoting multilateral cooperation, and contributing to the overall development of the region.

On March 10, Party General Secretary To Lam, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, visited the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang joined the delegation in attending the official welcome ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat and participated in a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and the ASEAN Permanent Representatives Committee. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on ASEAN’s central role in the region, commitments to strengthening intra-bloc cooperation, and initiatives on connectivity, digital transformation, and sustainable development.

On March 10, at Merdeka Palace, the Presidential Office in Jakarta, Indonesia, a grand official welcome ceremony was held for Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse, Ms. Ngo Phuong Ly, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on their state visit to the Republic of Indonesia at the invitation of Indonesian President and Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto. The ceremony took place in an atmosphere of solemnity and respect, reflecting Indonesia’s special regard for its strategic partnership with Viet Nam.

On March 10, following the official welcome ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Party General Secretary To Lam held talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
During the discussions, the two leaders expressed their delight at the strong and enduring friendship between Viet Nam and Indonesia, founded by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno, which has continuously grown over the past 70 years. Since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership in 2013, bilateral relations have become increasingly substantive and effective. Building on these solid achievements, both sides agreed to elevate Viet Nam-Indonesia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Notably, Viet Nam is Indonesia’s first Comprehensive Strategic Partner within ASEAN, marking a historic milestone that ushers in a new era of deeper, more comprehensive, and practical cooperation, benefiting the peoples of both nations while contributing to peace, development, and prosperity in ASEAN and the world.
Following the talks, Party General Secretary To Lam and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements and co-chaired a press meeting.

* Meeting with Representatives of the Leadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)
On March 10, as part of the state visit of Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse to the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo Member, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA), and Chairman of the Central Council on Theoretical Studies, met with representatives of the leadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
During the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang extended congratulations to the PDI-P on the results of the 2024 general elections, while recognizing the party’s influence, role, and prestige in Indonesian politics. He expressed confidence that the PDI-P would continue to achieve further successes, making significant contributions to Indonesia’s unity, prosperity, and its rightful role in the region and globally.
He also provided an update on Viet Nam’s recent developments and its comprehensive achievements over 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal), outlining Viet Nam’s development goals and future directions.
Regarding bilateral relations, he emphasized the long-standing friendship between Viet Nam and Indonesia, which dates back to President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno. This strong relationship has flourished across various fields, particularly as the two countries celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties this year.
He reaffirmed Viet Nam’s consistent foreign policy of valuing and strengthening relations with Indonesia, aiming to expand cooperation not only in traditional areas but also in emerging fields such as science and technology, innovation, digital economy, and green economy.
On party-to-party relations, he highlighted the Communist Party of Viet Nam’s policy of fostering ties with political parties based on independence, autonomy, equality, and mutual respect. He expressed the desire to deepen relations with PDI-P through delegation exchanges, high-level visits, and coordination in multilateral party forums. He also encouraged the PDI-P to continue playing an active role in advancing Viet Nam-Indonesia relations.
In response, the PDI-P representatives expressed their admiration for Viet Nam’s socio-economic achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening party-to-party relations to contribute to the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting took place in a friendly, sincere, and constructive atmosphere, further solidifying and fostering the strong relations between the two parties and the two countries.
